Oral Surgery

Oral surgery is the umbrella term used to describe any surgical procedure performed on the teeth, gums, jaws, or other oral structures. Procedures include tooth extractions, bone grafting, gum contouring, and wisdom teeth removal. In most cases, oral surgery is performed by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon or a periodontist. Advanced training in oral surgery procedures is required for these dental specialists.

Our in-house oral surgeon, Dr. Susel Perez has been working in private practice for over a decade. She is an experienced dental specialist who provides advanced preventive, reconstructive, and emergency dentistry care.

Oral Surgery Recovery Aftercare

You will receive detailed post-operative instructions following your oral surgery procedure. To reduce your risk of bleeding, infection, and other complications, follow these guidelines closely.

Here are some additional oral surgery aftercare tips:

  • Avoid spicy or acidic foods; they can irritate the surgical site. Stick to soft foods that are easy to chew.
  • Apply ice to the outside of your face for 20 minutes at a time to reduce swelling.
  • Avoid smoking, as it can slow down the healing process.
  • Take pain medication as prescribed by your doctor.

What is the most common type of oral surgery?

Tooth extraction is the most common type of oral surgery, specifically wisdom teeth removal. It is recommended by many dental specialists to remove your wisdom teeth, the third molars, during adolescence before they fully develop fully, so that potential problems can be avoided.

It may be necessary to extract teeth if you have severe decay, gum disease, dental trauma, or complications, like pain and swelling, with your wisdom teeth. In some cases, an emergency tooth extraction may be necessary. A dental emergency can result from an injury, infection, or any other problem requiring immediate attention. Tooth extractions may also be performed to prepare the gums for dentures or dental implants.
