In most cases, gum reshaping procedures are considered cosmetic and not medically necessary. However, some people undergo this surgery in conjunction with other periodontal procedures such as dental pocket reduction.
How does gum contouring work?
Before surgery, your provider will explain what she will be doing during the procedure. Then, your dentist will draw a line to simulate your updated gum line. By doing this she will be able to show you exactly how much gum will be removed or how the gum line will be reshaped. To numb the area, a local anesthetic may be applied.
Modern gum contouring is usually performed using a laser, which helps to minimize bleeding and swelling. The laser is used to contour and seal the tissue, resulting in a custom-fit gum line that frames your pearly whites. Recovery from the procedure is typically quick, and most patients report little discomfort.
Gum Contouring Aftercare
You may need to rest for a day or two after gum surgery, depending on the tenderness of your gums. The healing process can take a few days to a few weeks. Following your dentist’s post-surgery instructions for healing the site is very important. If you see any signs of infection, such as increased pain or swelling, contact your dentist immediately.
