Endodontics

Endodontics is a dental specialty that focuses on the root canal system and the tissues surrounding it. Endodontic treatment, or root canal treatment, treats the soft pulp tissue inside the tooth.

What is a root canal?

Root canal therapy, also known as endodontic therapy, is performed to remove all decay and bacteria from inside the tooth. The goal of this procedure is to save your natural teeth and keep you from having to get dentures or dental implants.

In the event that you are in urgent need of a same-day root canal, SP Smiles has got you covered. We are proud to offer emergency dental services.

Do root canals hurt?

It is not uncommon for people to assume that a root canal is going to be painful. But this is a common misconception that a lot of people have. Generally, a local anesthesia injection is applied to numb the area of the mouth and tooth being treated. Root canals rarely cause severe pain after or during the procedure.

Following a root canal, you might experience some mild to moderate soreness or pain, for which your dental professional may recommend pain medication.

What is a pulpectomy?

In a root canal, a pulpectomy is the first step of the procedure. A pulpectomy is the removal of pulp from all parts of the tooth’s inner chamber, including the roots. Pulpectomies are used to treat permanent teeth with infected pulp or abscesses and the procedure can be done on a tooth that is no longer alive. Cleaning the entire root canal is the objective of the procedure in order to prevent further infection.

What is a pulpotomy?

Pulpotomies involve the removal of the coronal pulp from the tooth. The coronal pulp is located within the portion of the tooth that extends past the gumline.

Pulpotomies, as opposed to root canals and pulpectomies, are performed on teeth that are still alive. This means teeth are responsive to temperature, have sensation, and show signs of blood flow. A successful pulpotomy procedure requires that there is no abscess in the area, meaning no acute pain under the tooth or bone loss.

The procedure is often performed on a primary tooth with pulp damage. In this case, a filling material that can be reabsorbed by the body is used to fill the tooth. Still, pulpotomies can also be performed on permanent teeth with cavities or dental trauma that have reached the pulp.
