Invisalign

The Invisalign system is a removable orthodontic appliance offered as an alternative to more traditional orthodontic techniques. Invisalign is a clear aligner that is intended for people who find the idea of a mouthful of metal braces or brackets too daunting. With Invisalign, you can straighten your teeth while maintaining the look of your natural smile. All adults and teenagers with completely erupted permanent teeth are eligible for Invisalign.

The Invisalign System

Invisalign method requires the use of a series of removable aligners to gradually adjust the way the teeth meet when the jaws bite together. During the initial consultation with Invisalign, a set of dental impressions and photographs of the teeth are taken. Using these impressions, a three-dimensional computer model is created of how the teeth could be moved incrementally, allowing custom-made aligners to be developed.

Align Technologies’ dental laboratory manufactures Invisalign aligners using computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology. It takes approximately two weeks for each aligner to move the teeth by .25 millimeters to .33 millimeters when worn as directed. Even though the aligners are removable for eating, drinking, brushing, and flossing, they must be worn for a minimum of 20 hours per day in order to be effective.

In most cases, both upper and lower teeth require 20 to 30 aligners. Treatment is usually completed in less than a year for most adults. Depending on the specific alignment issue, treatment may take longer.

Invisalign: At-Home Maintenance

The Invisalign instructions must be faithfully followed in order to ensure the finest possible results. Follow your dentist’s instructions for how long your aligners must stay on and what you can and cannot eat and drink. For instance, to prevent stains on the aligners, dentists recommend drinking only water while wearing the aligners. It is possible to compromise your treatment success if you fail to follow treatment recommendations. Visit your dentist periodically for regular check-up appointments.

Invisalign Treatment Cost

Invisalign treatment costs about the same as traditional braces. Your dentist will be able to estimate how much your treatment will cost based on the extent of your unique dental condition. Dental insurance plans may cover Invisalign to the extent that they cover traditional orthodontic treatments. If you have dental insurance, you may be eligible for orthodontic benefits.
