Cleaning & Checkup

Dental cleaning is a painless procedure that removes plaque and tartar from the surface of teeth, which can help prevent cavities and gum disease. Another benefit of dental cleaning is that it can restore the natural whiteness of the teeth by removing discoloration caused by food and drink. During the cleaning, your dentist or hygienist will use special instruments to remove plaque and tartar from the surface of your teeth. Having a professional cleaning every six months is ideal.

Fluoride

For patients who are at moderate to severe risk for enamel erosion and tooth decay, a fluoride treatment is recommended as a form of preventative care. Fluoride is a mineral that is used in a topical treatment applied directly to the teeth. Fluoride treatments protect and restore tooth enamel and even reverse early signs of tooth decay. The mineral fluoride can be found in drinking water, toothpaste, and mouthwash in relatively small quantities.

Sealants

Dental sealants provide a quick and easy way to prevent enamel erosion and the formation of cavities. Placed on the chewing surface of teeth, dental sealants are thin coatings that harden immediately, so chewing can be done directly following application. Generally lasting for years with no complications, dental sealants are most commonly placed on the back teeth of children between the ages of 6 and 12. When applied soon after permanent molars come into the mouth, dental sealants prevent most cavities.

Adults can also benefit from dental sealants to address concerns such as developing grooves and fissures. Since dental sealants are better used for preventive care than restorative care, they are not a viable alternative to dental fillings after tooth decay has already begun.

Oral Cancer Screenings

Dental exams include a number of preventative measures, one of which is a screening for mouth cancer as part of the procedure. Oral cancer screenings are important because they can detect tumors in the mouth at an early stage when they’re more likely to be treated successfully. Oral cancer screenings can also help identify other oral health problems.

Oral cancer symptoms include cancers of the tongue, gums, throat, esophagus, and any other areas of the mouth. Symptoms of mouth cancer may include:

  • Sores. Abscess of the mouth that bleeds easily, or for no apparent reason, and does not seem to heal within a reasonable period of time.
  • Discoloration.  White or red patches in the mouth. However, it is important to note that a persistent white coating on the tongue may be an indicator of thrush, which can be treated with antifungals prescribed by your doctor.
  • Persistent pain or discomfort. Sore throat, hoarseness, or difficulty chewing or swallowing.
  • Lumps. Abnormal irritation, lumps, or numb patches in the mouth, tongue, or neck.
